Archaeology

Akshay Sarathi studies early marine resource exploitation on the island of Zanzibar, using marine fauna to measure the degree to which a society was dependent on the ocean. His current projects include the excavation of three sites on Zanzibar: Kuumbi Cave, Kizimkazi Dimbani, and Unguja Ukuu, as well as an ethnographic project aimed at understanding how methods of capture, processing, and discard affect the taphonomy of fish remains.
