Carolyn Freiwald
Carolyn Freiwald spent the first part of the summer as field director for Jason Yaeger's Summer Field program in Maya Archaeology in Belize . Current research includes Classic Maya animal use at Xunantunich and its hinterland, with a focus on non-local animal resource acquisition using isotopic sourcing with Dr. Yaeger. She also has completed analyses of Formative (Blackman Eddy) and Historic (San Pedro) zooarchaeological collections, along with study of faunal material from Wisconsin , Oklahoma , and the Galapagos Islands at the UW-Madison Zoological Museum . Her main research focus is on ancient immigration in the Belize River Valley and surrounding regions, and how that relates to patterns of population movement across the Classic era Maya world. Isotopic research is performed under the direction of Dr. T. Douglas Price at the UW-Madison Laboratory for Archaeological Chemistry.
Carolyn also has worked in Mexico mapping strontium isotope values in Chiapas , as well in Guatemala , Panama , and Nicaragua . Experience outside of Latin America includes fieldwork in Romania and three seasons in Denmark working at Mesolithic and Neolithic sites with Dr. T. Douglas Price. Locally, she is involved with historic preservation, writing landmark nominations for notable buildings in Madison , and maintenance of the Zoological Museum 's dermestid beetle colony.
