Join the UW-Kendo Club! The University of Wisconsin Kendo Club is open to all students and faculty of UW-Madison, and we are always looking for new members. While some students choose to attend the kendo class first (EA277), club is also a place to learn the basics and we are happy to instruct novices. Kendo is suitable to people of both sexes, and we welcome members of any age, size or shape. All levels of kendo experience, from beginners to higher level dans are encouraged to practice with us. Kendo is not a utilitarian martial art like karate, rather it is a discipline to integrate the mind and body. One does not learn self defense with the sword. Instead, through meditation and rigorous practice we develop our own personal potential, and help others in the dojo do the same. The practice is a rigorous cardiovascular exercise, so be prepared to sweat quite a bit. We always train barefoot on the wooden gym floor for balance and traction, and blisters are common during the first few months. Also, even though you wear protective armor called bogu (see the equipment section), occasionally a stray shinai strike will miss the armor. Bruises and blisters come with the territory, but serious injury is rare. If you are interested in joining kendo, please check the schedule and stop by any practice. Any member will be glad to explain the discipline to you, and get you started. Once you decide to stay with us, there are a few nominal costs. For more information, check out the basics section of the website. Equipment and Fees:
